Whether stories center on a cat, dog, or other magnificent creature, furry anime series give viewers a glimpse of what life would be like if animals stepped into our shoes. Cute and entertaining, furry anime offers a creative and imaginative storyline.

With that said, we present an updated list of the top ten furry anime recommendations. We know there are many more series that capture the fuzzy-wuzzy adorableness of various animals, so here’s what we’ve gathered so far! Make sure to check out our previous article below. Enjoy!

Hataruaku Onii-san! centers on the story of two cats, a cheerful tabby named Tapio Chatorazawa and a pessimist Russian blue named Kuehiko Roshihara. Tapio and Kuehiko are working buddies, performing various odd jobs while balancing life as students at the same college. Hataruaku Onii-san! spotlights Tapio and Kuehiko’s personal and working relationships with very entertaining four-minute episodes.

The community Tapio and Kuehiko live in is charming and attractive, allowing the characters to shine through and make the plot intensely interesting. A lot goes on for Tapio and Kuehiko, a real treat to see, unlike their real-life counterparts who sleep about 16 hours a day.

Chako Ishibashi leads an average life as a middle school student. However, there is one quality in Chako’s ordinary life that sticks out—the girl who sits next to her in class, named Shibainuko-san, is quite peculiar. What is it about her that stands out? Could it be Shibainuko-san’s popularity or her beauty? Simply put, Shibainuko-san doesn’t look like a human at all, but instead, looks just like a Shiba Inu! Sharing the characteristics of a human and Japan’s most beloved dog breed, Shibainuko-san is favored by her peers.

Whether or not she is dog or human, all of the characters in Shibainuko-san are enjoyable. As each episode is very short in length, the overall story is lighthearted and simple, bringing a smile to each viewer’s face.

Stress is all too common for 25-year-old red panda Retsuko. Although she performs her best on the job, she’s scolded continuously and pressured by her co-workers and supervisor. Retsuko’s willingness and job performance often lead her to be ill-treated by everyone, and she can only take so much of this abuse. For relief, this salary woman blows off steam by singing heavy death metal at a karaoke club. Aggressive Retsuko episodes are not very long, so it is something worth giving a try. Retsuko is the cutest red panda ever, even when she’s screaming death metal!

Uma Musume: Pretty Derby follows the story of “horse girls,” great racehorses of the past reincarnated as girls with the ability and speed of these magnificent creatures. The best horse girls attend Tokyo’s Tracen Academy in the hope of becoming the best in the league as both racers and idols. One of many horse girls we encounter is Special Week, a high school horse girl hailing from the countryside who just transferred to Tracen. Vowing to be the best, Rin notices fellow student Silence Suzuka, emulating her riding style and determined to be on her team.

Inspired by famous racehorses in competition, viewers get to learn more about the sport, technicalities, and backgrounds. We get to experience the group’s motivation, working and training extremely hard to accomplish their goals and dreams. The cast of characters is very diverse, striving to highlight each girl’s vibrant characteristics. Uma Musume: Pretty Derby is bright and lively all due to the horse girls and their cute personalities.

Set in the far future, we are welcomed to Japari Park! In this beautiful environment, our characters are adorable therianthropic creatures that exude friendship and happiness. In the story, we are introduced to a young girl named Kaban who has no idea of who she is or where she’s from. Traveling with her new companion, Serval, the two commence their venture, in which they uncover various mysteries, meeting new and friendly creatures along the way.

Kemono Friends has a vast and intriguing cast of characters that contribute to an exciting storyline. As our characters unite to overcome challenging obstacles, their combined strengths and personalities are some of the reasons why they can achieve their objective. The animation style and the animal girls are genuinely eye-catching, utilizing many colors within scenic shots and action sequences.

Machi Amayadori is a young shrine maiden who has spent her whole life in the countryside with Natsu, her talking guardian bear. Tired of the quiet and calm rural life, at fourteen, Machi wants to venture to the big city and start high school there. Can Natsu prepare her for city life? Will the busy, bustling city be too much for them both?

What does a bear know about life in the big city? Not much, but his caring and protective nature show concern for his beloved companion. Machi must learn how to deal with social anxieties and interact with everyone she meets along the way while Natsu gives her sage advice. With its charming and appealing premise, Kumamiko: Girl Meets Bear is funny, cute and enjoyable all around.

Shirokuma Café is an exciting and informative anime that directs viewers to learn a little more about the animal kingdom. In addition to numerous facts about bears, penguins and various other species, Shirokuma Café provides us with a lot of comedy and puns. As we observe Panda’s attempt to land a job at the Café, we also watch the interactions of a frequent patron, Penguin, and lounge around with lazy Shirokuma. With each episode, we notice the often-disparate day-to-day activities of these and other personified animals.

Shirokuma Café offers relatable and memorable circumstances that make each character stand out and easy to identify with. Every aspect is each incredibly unique. Containing an immense volume of comedy, in addition to cute animals that act human, Polar Bear Café is a feel-good, lighthearted viewing experience.

Cuticle Detective Inaba features half human/animal hybrids that exist in a world alongside humans. Although the two coexist peacefully, there are those that deflect from harmony. When it comes to the hybrid criminals, there’s no one like Hiroshi Inaba, a part wolf detective that has a fantastic ability to extract information just by getting in contact with a piece of someone’s hair. As every hero has his nemesis, half goat crime boss Don Valentino makes Inaba’s work challenging. Vowing to do away with Valentino and his hunger for green, can Inaba’s skills as detective and wolf bring him down for good?

An original story about a werewolf detective fighting against a mafia goat, the characters of Cuticle Detective Inaba are remarkably relatable, closely matching in appearance and personality. The animation is bright, crisp and vibrant, easily attracting viewers and altogether appealing. Filled with action, mystery, comedy and the supernatural, Cuticle Detective Inaba is a furry anime we recommend.

Dog & Scissors centers on the life of Kazuhito Harumi, a high school boy who loves books. He has a passion for literature, mainly novels by Kirihime Natsuno, who goes under the pen name, «Akiyama Shinobu.» One day, Kazuhito spots Kirihime at a café engaged in her work, at risk of getting shot by some random criminal.

In the spur of the moment, Kazuhito shields her from the attack and is killed instead. Through supernatural power, Kazuhito is reincarnated as a dachshund. Howling to the moon, Kazuhito is living his new life without his books. However, excitement catches him when a woman carrying a pair of scissors offers to help him. A woman he knows as Kirihime. A girl and a dog, this anime is hilarious, upbeat and engaging because, through Kirihime, we get to see into the mind of a mini dachshund.

This Studio Ghibli film follows Haru Yoshioka, who instinctively saves a cat from getting hit by a car. Unbeknownst to her, Haru happened to protect not just any cat, but the prince of cats from the mystical kingdom of cats. Extending their gratitude, the cats of the kingdom give Haru many wonderful cat gifts, going as far as to extend the prince’s hand in marriage. In this unlikely union, Haru seeks the help of the cat’s version of the BBB to get her out of this situation, meeting the very dapper, Baron. Suddenly, the citizens of the cat kingdom kidnap Haru, all the while, the clock ticks as she is turning into a cat. Consequently, it is up to the Baron to save Haru and restore balance in the cat kingdom.

The Cat Returns is an excellent furry film because it highlights Haru’s ability to communicate and understand cats, qualities many cat owners wish they had. As Haru is praised and thanked for saving the cat prince’s life, her new cat friends reward her in many ways. As such, we are rewarding this film number one on our furry anime list!

The furry fandom, for those that don’t know, is a fandom dedicated specifically to anthropomorphic characters. The notion of animals with human characteristics has captivated people for much longer than animation has existed, as is evidenced by legends told by cultures all around the world.

Anthropomorphic characters are loosely defined as characters that aren’t human but possess human traits. Such characters have been widely featured in animation the world over, and Japanese anime is no exception. What follows is a list of shows that feature these characters, and whether you’re in the furry fandom or not, you might find something you like here.

Anthropomorphic foxes are almost always tricksters, and Zorori is a cunning character in typical fox fashion. Kaiketsu Zorori follows the adventures and antics of this crafty canine as he tries to use his wits to obtain the title of King of Mischief. However, his plans rarely go off without a hitch. Rather than creating chaos, he often winds up causing more good than harm.

A fast paced military action flick, with cute little anthropomorphized rabbits playing the leads. It might sound farfetched, but that’s exactly what Cat Shit One is. While only one episode was released it remains one of the most aesthetically stunning Japanese animations featuring anthropomorphized characters.

Touya’s companions are anthropomorphized, including a gorilla named Gariell, a wolf named Greyfass, and an eagle named Beakwood. This action packed series is a little known gem, and certainly qualifies as one of the top anime with furry fandom appeal.

The main character Giovanni lives in a small, quiet town. Sent off by his mother to run an errand, he finds himself on a journey across the universe on an intergalactic railroad. He travels to a series of heavenly bodies, each of which presents him with a new adventure.

Ginga Tetsudou no Yoru as a series is loosely based on a children’s novel, but the movie is better suited to be viewed by more mature audiences. The majority of the characters are anthropomorphic and it is certainly a unique viewing experience as far as anime goes, one that lands it a spot on this list.

This show is about cats running a pizza shop, and it’s just as hilarious as it sounds. For Speedy, Polly, and Guido, the restaurant business is just their day job. Not all is well in their village of little Tokyo, and the three felines secretly work against a corrupt local government, fighting for justice when they’re not busy tossing pizza dough.
The three main characters of this series are all feline anthromorphs. Not only is this show successful as a light-hearted comedy, but the animation style is unique. This show is widely regarded as a classic, making Kyatto Ninden Teyande one of the shows included in this list.

Though the characters are physically humanoid, the emotional depth they present as canines gives this show an appeal to the furry fandom. Ginga Nareboshi Gin has a cast of engaging personalities, is a wonderful retro series that has stood the test of time, and certainly deserves a mention on this list.

Gene Starwind and Jim Hawking go from operating a small business to becoming fugitives almost overnight. This series is set in a colorful, futuristic dystopia, and features an appropriately eccentric set of adversaries on the tail of these two unlikely heroes. Gene and Jim would be inadequately equipped to handle the challenges that ensue but luckily they are in possession of the most powerful spaceship in the universe, The Outlaw Star.

Humanity is under threat from a mad scientist who believes its time as the dominant species on earth is up. In order to eliminate humans, he genetically engineers ocean dwelling creatures to take their place, and an all-out war begins. Their last hope against this aquatic menace is a special aquatic force known as the Blue Fleet, but will they be enough?

This series features a number of enchanting humanoid creatures who are anthropomorphic versions of marine animals. The furry fandom extends beyond mammalian characters, to a subset commonly referred to as «scalies» that encompasses aquatic and cold-blooded characters. Because this series features such characters, and tells a dynamic and unique story it earns a place on this list.

The universe in which Hyper Police takes place is intricately crafted, and learning more about it is almost as interesting as watching the plot progress. This series features a rich cast of characters, including fully anthropomorphic characters, kemonomimi, monsters, and everything in-between. On its own, it’s an exceptional show, and one of the few serious series that has an anthromorph as one of its main characters, putting it at the top of this list.

Anthropomorphic characters in anime have been around for almost as long as the ones in western animation. Today, anime with furry fandom appeal span across a wide variety of genres from children’s shows, to action series, to art films.
