Vanitas is one of the main protagonists of The Case Study Of Vanitas. He introduces himself as an ‘average human being’ using the power of the Book Of Vanitas in order to heal vampires of the Curse Of The Blue Moon. Vanitas was named after the vampire, Vanitas, from the original tale of the Blue Moon.
Contents
Appearance
Vanitas’ scars, usually hidden by gloves.
Vanitas is a young man with bluish dark wavy hair and light blue eyes. One side of his hair is cut shorter than the other in an asymmetrical fashion, with one level on the left side, and two levels on the right. He wears earrings on both sides. His right ear is embedded with one piercing, and his left ear is embedded with two ear piercings and a dangling hourglass earring that seems to have previously been owned by Blue Moon Vanitas.
Vanitas wears a baggy coat with hanging sleeves and a tail that bells out and floats. The coat is far too big for him (it’s shown to fit Noé perfectly in official art), so side of the coat often slips off his shoulder. Underneath, he wears a striped vest and a belt. Attached to this belt are a pair of knives whose hilts are rigged with wires, a book holster containing The Book of Vanitas, and tool cases. In his pockets are a pocket watch, a pallet, and single wires. He wears spats and short boots on his feet and pointed gloves on his hands. A large light blue bow is wrapped around his waist and his shirt collar.
Personality
Vanitas seems to take nothing seriously, and almost always has a playful grin on his face. He acts impulsively, makes and carries out reckless plans, gets into friendly insult-fights with Dante, and carries a mischievous air about himself. Vanitas finds utmost amusement in others’ (most frequently Jeanne and Noé‘s) abnormal reactions to things. Vanitas seems to be flirtatious and open to affection at the start of his relationship with Jeanne — however, this is entirely because he finds her reactions to his behavior entertaining. When Jeanne begins to truly reciprocate Vanitas’s over-flirtatious behavior, he recoils and begins to shy away from her.
Despite appearing confident and mischievous, Vanitas knows when to get serious and has a surprisingly short temper. Vanitas frequently snaps at Noé, even threatening to kill the vampire when Noé asks Vanitas if he could drink the latter’s blood.
Vanitas often attempts to put up emotional walls and hide his true emotions under a playful demeanor and a grin — or, if he’s in a bad mood, under a completely blank expression. Vanitas seems to hate being vulnerable around people, refusing to sleep around anyone he doesn’t trust (which is nearly everyone). He can put on and take off a smile whenever a smile is necessary. Vanitas is highly intelligent and is talented at reading people. He has strong memorization skills, remembering all of the Chasseurs‘ underground tunnels and paths as well as all the historical documents that Dante gives him.
Vanitas loathes himself. He acts without regard for his life on several occasions — purposefully goading August Ruthven into a murderous rage and getting into fights with various vampires. Vanitas tells Noé that he’s not interested in the kind of person who would fall for him, seeming to see himself as so unlovable that only a revolting person would ever fall for him. Jeanne’s growing feelings for Vanitas send him into a two-week long emotional crisis where he can barely leave his bed. Vanitas despises the idea of anyone choosing to risk their life to protect him and is furious when Noé steps in to protect him from Ruthven during the Bal Masqué, berating Noé about his actions days later. Vanitas seems to truly believe that he is unworthy of love and is almost terrified by the idea of anybody caring about him, whether it’s platonically or romantically.
The confident, cheerful persona that Vanitas puts up begins to crumble in situations where he isn’t in control, or when his past or his self-hatred is dredged up.

When Vanitas was a child, his parents were killed by a vampire. He was saved by the chasseurs and taken in. They trained him to become a chasseur, but somewhere along the line, Vanitas caught Doctor Moreau’s eye and became his research subject. According to Moreau, Vanitas went through multiple experiments that nearly killed him, and yet he never cried nor complained. This could be the truth, but Moreau has proven himself to be a suspicious and unreliable narrator.
At some point during his time with Moreau, Moreau introduced Vanitas to a new “test subject” named Mikhail and informed Vanitas that his job would be looking after Mikhail from now on. Vanitas formed a very close relationship with the boy, coming to care deeply for him, taking on the role of an older brother and a protector in their relationship. Vanitas was the very first person in Mikhail’s life who loved him unconditionally, and it had Mikhail caring for him deeply in return, finding safety and warmth in his presence.
The experiments continued until Vanitas and Mikhail were rescued from Moreau’s lab by Vanitas of the Blue Moon, also known as Luna. Misha immediately took a liking to the vampire and saw Luna as his “father”. Unlike Mikhail, Vanitas despised Luna for being a vampire. Despite this dislike, Luna taught both Mikhail and Vanitas about curse-bearers and various malnomen. As time went on, Vanitas became more attached to Luna, letting them hug him. The events in Vanitas’s past after this are largely unknown, but Vanitas according to Misha, had killed Luna.
Since receiving the Book of Vanitas, Vanitas has dedicated his life to curing Curse-Bearing Vampires and considers himself a vampire doctor of sorts as a result; using the power of the Book of Vanitas to restore a Curse-Bearer’s true name.
Shortly after acquiring the Book and beginning to work as a vampire doctor, Vanitas sought out an information broker named Dante, and the two began working together.
After an unknown period of time, Vanitas eventually came into contact with a vampire named Amelia, who had voiced her concern about various symptoms generally associated with Curse-Bearers. As such, Vanitas had Amelia board La Baleine in order to meet him in Paris to help her with her ailment. Realizing that they did not have as much time left before Amelia’s malnomen manifested, Vanitas sought out his partner for hire, Dante, and hurried to intercept La Baleine and he loves vanitas.
Relationships
Noé Archiviste
Vanitas first meets Noé on the La Baleine, engaging in a fight with him in order to get to Amelia. After healing her Vanitas is followed by Noé, who wishes to learn about the Book Of Vanitas. Vanitas thinks Noé is funny and decides he likes him, asking Noé to become his new bodyguard. Despite Noé’s continued refusal Vanitas persists and follows Noé around. Noé agrees to stay with him, if only to save Amelia from execution. Vanitas is thrilled Noé will be helping him, however much Noé insists Vanitas is the one helping him. Vanitas tells Noé he finds him very interesting. Despite Noé’s refusal to cooperate, Vanitas introduces him to Dante as his new bodyguard and partner, causing protests from both Noé and Dante.
Noé and Vanitas have extremely different personalities and approaches to life, which causes various conflicts between the two (most notably, their argument during the chasseurs arc). Despite all of this, they make a good team and have grown to genuinely care for each other. Vanitas frequently spends his time getting separated from Noé as the latter wanders around whatever location they’re in and inevitably gets lost.
Noé states that at the end of their journey, he will kill Vanitas for reasons and circumstances yet to be revealed.
Amelia Ruth
Amelia and Vanitas had exchanged letters before they met on the La Baleine, she was going to see him to become healed of her curse. When they meet on the airship Vanitas heals her quickly and returns her true name. Amelia is extremely grateful to him for this. Vanitas doesn’t seem to be personally attached to Amelia, seeing her as only a patient, he wishes for her to be saved from execution so he can ask her questions about the Charlatan.
Dante
Dante is Vanitas’ information broker who helps him to find new patients. Vanitas is rude to Dante and refuses to call him by his name, instead favouring ‘baldy’. Vanitas treats Dante as a ‘shield’ but has replaced him with Noé. Dante appears to know how to manipulate Vanitas into continuing to pay him by withholding information.
Count Parks Orlok
Orlok dislikes Vanitas and doesn’t trust him. He refuses to acknowledge him as ‘Vanitas’ and has little belief in his power to save vampires. In order to keep an eye on him Orlok requests Vanitas stay in his hotel.
Jeanne
Initially Vanitas is afraid of Jeanne due to her power as the Hellfire Witch however this changes after she concedes the fight in order to protect Luca, something that Vanitas considers weak. Instead he begins to see her weakness as beautiful and tells her she interests him before kissing her. Although Jeanne is his enemy Vanitas claims to have fallen in love with her after kissing her during their fight. Jeanne says she will find and kill him for this, which Vanitas ignores and instead is happy that she’ll be coming to see him.
Later in the series, Vanitas and Jeanne have more encounters such as Vanitas baiting Jeanne into drinking his blood at a Masked Ball, Vanitas holding that secret as a form of blackmail and making Jeanne call him by his name and swear to only drink his blood for as long as he lives. They also go on a fake date set up by Jeanne to get Vanitas to hate her (that doesn’t go according to plan), which after she witnesses a child scrape his knee, she flees with Vanitas. He then tries to interrogate her again but then comes up with the assumption that she has been sworn not to speak of it. Jeanne then begs Vanitas for his blood to which he gives her. He also swears to kill her out of love if she ever hurts her master, which is a growing fear of hers. Another example of their growing affections is Jeanne nursing Vanitas back to health after he takes a poisonous hit in her stead, which leads to Vanitas getting annoyed with Jeanne for helping him. Later, Vanitas asks Jeanne for her wish and he would grant it. She tells him to heal her friend Chloe so she would be free. He does, and to thank him she drinks his blood and gives him a kiss. This throws him into an emotional crisis where he is confused by his feeling and soon discovers that he has actually fallen in love with Jeanne.
Abilities
Vanitas has shown himself to be capable in a fight and uses a short, spiked dagger to attack. He appears to prefer not to fight, instead using other people as his shields while he uses his intellect to discern the causes of vampire’s suffering.
Vanitas trips Noé using wire
Vanitas is one of the two people (along with Misha) who know how to use the Book Of Vanitas. Instead of using it to kill vampires, Vanitas heals them.

Мемуары Ванитаса / Vanitas no Karte

Roland Fortis (ローラン・フォルティス, Rooran Forutisu), formally known as Roland of Jasper (碧玉のローラン, Hekigyoku no Rooran) is a side character in The Case Study of Vanitas. He is the Sixth Paladin of the Chasseurs, a division of the Catholic Church dedicated to hunting vampires.
Regarded as one of the strongest Chasseurs, he first appears as an antagonist of the Hunters of the Dark arc, then makes a return in the Beast of Gevaudan arc. In his early appearances, his given name is mistranslated as Laurent.
Though Roland had spent his entire life believing vampires to be monsters incapable of comprehending good, witnessing interactions between Vanitas, a human, and Noé Archiviste, a vampire, convinced him of vampires’ humanity. Stunned and elated by this revelation, Roland began to seek any Church-sponsored information on vampires that did not justify their genocide. After he found none, Roland decided to hold onto his belief that God’s love and blessings «were shared equally with vampires,» to the point of threatening to physically destroying the Chasseurs were he to meet resistance.
Contents
Description
Appearance
Roland is a fair skinned young man of average height. Exceptionally well built, he has broader shoulders and a more pronounced chest than nearly all of Mochizuki’s male characters. His face is round; with pronounced cheeks and a gently sloping chin; large, round, green eyes with long eyelashes; and thick, dark eyebrows. His hair is blond and short, only going just beyond his ears, his bangs cut very close to his hairline. Jun Mochizuki has joked that every time she draws him, his physique gets better and his hair gets fluffier.
He usually wears the standard Chasseur’s uniform, including black pants, a cassock, a pale harness, a dark holster for Durandal, a ribbon-like belt, dark leather boots, and a rosary. His hands are protected by white armored gloves.
Roland is sometimes drawn with no eyebrows. This seems to have started accidentally, but has become a bit of a running gag.
Personality
Roland often acts in a manner that emphasizes a fanaticism with his beliefs and seems oblivious to his surroundings and how his actions and words are regarded by others. Despite this, he is actually quite sharp and casually manipulates situations to his will, as seen when he omits information from reports and when he traps Noé and Vanitas during their first meeting. His self-awareness is revealed when he is confronted by Olivier about the consequences of his changing beliefs towards vampires, and he is slightly apologetic, although only for a brief moment. In battle, Roland is a serious, capable and deadly opponent, willing to use many means to defeat a threat.
Roland has one or more younger sibling(s) and has developed a strong sense of responsibility through them. He seems to treat Vanitas and Astolfo in particular like younger siblings.
History
Roland was the vice-captain of Olivier’s team of Chasseurs until Olivier recommended him for a promotion to Captain.
Several years ago, an injured Roland skipped out on his bed rest and encountered Mikhail while wandering the Chasseurs’ compound. Roland quickly befriended Misha while guiding him back to the other Chasseurs, and was horrified to learn that Mikhail believed the vampire who had killed his mother had saved her. Roland began crying, begging God to have mercy on Mikhail. He was then caught by Olivier and Georges and dragged back to his room.
Hunters of the Dark Arc
Roland first hears about Vanitas from other chasseurs and is immediately desperate to save Vanitas from the vampires that he believes are using him.
While separated from his team— Maria and Georges— Roland runs into Vanitas and Noé, who pretend to be two Chasseurs named Vincent and Gilbert (a reference to Vincent and Gilbert Nightray). Roland immediately recognizes them as intruders, and believes that they killed the two Chasseur guards and stole their uniforms for their disguises.
Roland claiming that Vanitas is being threatened by Noé.
Roland leads the two intruders to a trapped room and begins to fight them with intent to kill. He uses a unique flash bomb to disable Noé and learns that the man is a vampire. During an argument with Vanitas, Noé calls out his name, and Roland learns that the human intruder is Vanitas. He immediately embraces Vanitas, much to the latter’s extreme discomfort. Roland, despite Vanitas scratching him, swears to save Vanitas from the clutches of vampires and continues to fight Noé. He seems to have the upper hand during the battle, but Noé and Vanitas manage to escape.
Roland is reunited with Maria and Georges, and the three begin the hunt for Noé and Vanitas.
Thanks to Noé’s ability to rewrite gravity and Vanitas’s knowledge of the Chasseurs’ hideout, the two manage to evade capture until a very loud argument between the two attracts Roland and co’s attention. Roland and Georges are separated from Maria, Vanitas, and Noé until Noé steps out from behind the barrier, carrying a terrified Vanitas as a hostage. Georges believes that it’s a trap, but Vanitas’s genuine terror convinces Roland to rescue the human. While grabbing Vanitas, Roland is attacked by Noé who introduces himself, and begs him to listen to what they have to say. The group speaks together about Moreau, and Roland decides to go with Vanitas and Noé to Moreau’s lab. Vanitas leads the group to Moreau’s lab and Roland asks Noé to be his friend.
The group meets Moreau, and Roland cheerfully pretends to be a supporter of the doctor, while completely despising him on the inside. Noé attacks Moreau when the latter asks to gouge out one of Vanitas’s eyes, and Roland backs him up. Roland provides cover while Noé and Vanitas work together to take down the malnomen Prédateur, and watches on while Noé and Vanitas laugh together. Roland then helps the two escape the compound and has Maria lead them out.
Noé reassuring Roland that he’s not a threat.
A few minutes later Roland is approached by a raging Olivier, who asks him what he did to cause this mess this time. Roland delightedly tells Olivier that he made friends with a vampire, and tells him that the events of the day have shown him that humans and vampires can coexist and that vampires aren’t evil. Olivier warns Roland to never tell anyone other than himself about this, and states to Georges that this is bound to lead to trouble.
Return of the Beast Arc
Having encountered Noé and Vanitas, Roland begins to restudy the history of vampires and humans in an attempt to see it from a new perspective, now believing that God’s love was shared equally between humans and vampires. After revealing this to Olivier, he is chastised and warned that should word of his newfound sentiments towards vampires make its way to their superiors, his parents and siblings might be harmed. In response, Roland places a threat by casually asking how many paladins he would be able to take down. Afterwards, Olivier notices that Roland has been reading about Lord Ruthven and the case of the Beast of Gédauvan.
Roland and his team, plus Olivier and his squad, arrive in the Silver Forest during the final confrontation between Jeanne, Vanitas, Noé, Chloé, Jean- Jacques, Dante, Johann, and Naenia. Roland splits off from the other Chasseurs and asks Vanitas and Noé what the plan is. Vanitas tells him to focus on saving lives and ignore Chloé and Jean- Jacques while he tries to cure them. Roland agrees, and tells his squad as such, but warns Vanitas and Noé that if he feels it necessary, he won’t hesitate to kill the two cursebearers.
Roland and Olivier fight various wolves and Naenia as Vanitas and Noé save Chloé and Jean- Jacques
After the incident in the forest, Roland and Olivier return to headquarters. Some time later, the two go to a cafe for coffee after piloting small airplanes earlier in the day. While at the cafe, Roland spies a distressed Vanitas. Pretending that Vanitas is a friend of his named Vincent (a reference to one of their earlier interactions) and introduces him to Olivier, saying he met “Vincent” when the latter challenged him to a drinking competition. Olivier apologizes for Roland causing “Vincent” trouble and offers him coffee, which Vanitas is initially against but ends up agreeing to.
Vanitas reveals to Roland and Olivier that “his friend” is suffering from various symptoms of love, but can’t figure out what’s going on. Both Roland and Olivier immediately recognize Vani’s “friend” as the doctor himself and the various “symptoms” as love. Vanitas is horrified at the concept.
Roland suggests that the person Vanitas is in love with must love him back. Vanitas shouts that nobody could ever love him and runs off, with Noé (whom Roland refers to as “Gilbert”) in pursuit. Olivier comments that he’s noticed the two men are Vanitas and Noé, and that it’s surprising to see Roland so involved with Vanitas. Roland replies that he feels like if he takes his eyes off Vanitas, Vanitas will fall apart.
Powers and Abilities
Relationships
Astolfo Granatum
Roland rescued Astolfo when he and his family were attacked and violated by vampires. Astolfo decided to join the Chasseurs, started to admire him and aspire to become someone as strong as him, but due to a falling out between them, that affection is no longer reflected by Astolfo who claims to hate him now.
Vanitas
Roland originally considered Vanitas to be an unfortunate child and sought to save him when Vanitas entered the catacombs, refusing to believe that Vanitas had chosen his current path of life by his own will. After forcefully having his viewpoint on vampires changed by Noé’s existence, he changes his opinion and helps Vanitas to escape. Roland has been fascinated by Vanitas ever since, and often expresses his complete and unconditional love for Vanitas. much to the latter’s chagrin. Roland wants to know everything he can know about Vanitas, and tells Olivier that he feels like if he takes his eyes off him, Vanitas will fall apart.
Noé Archiviste
Noé met Roland at the Catacombs with Vanitas. When Roland first met him, he attacked him for being a vampire but later he realized that he wasn’t a malicious vampire and that not all of the vampires are bad. They get along perfectly and consider themselves as friends.
Olivier
Roland and Olivier seem to be close. Olivier originally recommended Roland for the position of Jasper in an attempt to curb his irresponsibility; however, he is dismayed by Roland’s continual flippancy and his lack of regard for his position. Until Roland was assigned to his own unit, he was Olivier’s vice-captain. While Roland shifts perspective on his view of vampires, Oliver discourages his new discoveries, as they can harm his position in the Church as part of the Chasseurs. Roland largely ignores his warnings, believing that if the Chasseurs make a threat, he will be more than capable to take them on, including Oliver himself.
Roland seems to treat Gano coldly but politely, due to his kind nature, but is shown to have some level of distrust towards him and is seen discussing with Olivier about Gano’s suspicious movements.
